A tube-in-tube membrane microreactor for tertiary treatment of urban wastewaters by photo-Fenton at neutral pH: A proof of concept

This work presents a disruptive approach to promote highly-efficient photo-Fenton process at neutral pH under continuous mode operation. The system consists of tube-in-tube membrane reactor designed for continuous-flow titration low iron doses the annular reaction zone (ARZ). A concentrated acidic ferrous ion (Fe2+) solution is fed by lumen-side membrane, permeating through pores (inside-out mode), being dosed and uniformly delivered shell-side. Polluted water, containing amoxicillin (AMX) oxidant (H2O2), flows continuously in annulus (space between shell-side an outer quartz tube). catalyst radial dispersion enhanced helicoidal movement water around shell-side, efficiently promoting its contact with H2O2 UV light. efficiency photochemical photocatalytic oxidation was evaluated as function dose, injection (radial permeation vs upstream from inlet), light source (UVA UVC) aqueous matrix (synthetic real wastewater). At steady-state, Fe2+ addition, driven UVC light, showed highest AMX removal synthetic (?65%, rate 44 ?MAMX/min, using [Fe2+]ARZ = 2 mg/L [H2O2]inlet 10 mg/L) municipal wastewaters (?45%, 31 5 40 mg/L), residence time only 4.6 s.
